5 Super Skin Products

Thursday, 26 February 2015

Me and my skin are in constant battle. If I moisturise because it's dry then it ends up all shiny and oily. It was also very spotty in my teens and I do still get them, although nowhere near as bad. I also have big pores which I've just had to accept.

This battle has meant I've tried a whole range of weapons products in an attempt to fight some of my problems. Here's a few that I've been enjoying recently...

I've read about Good Things on quite a few blogs now, so when I was in Boots a couple weeks ago looking for a face mask, I decided to try it for myself. I think it's such good value for the amount of product you get. I went for the Avocado and Goji Berry one but they also had a Mauka Honey one which looked pretty good too! So far I'm very impressed with it. It leaves my skin feeling super soft and smells very lovely!

I got this solid make up brush cleanser for Christmas so I didn't want to look up the price too much but there seems to be a variety of sellers selling it on Amazon :) I realise it's not exactly a skin product but keeping your make up brushes clean is important to stop bacteria growing on them - no one wants to spread bacteria all over their face ewww!
That said...I'm terrible with keeping on top of cleaning my own brushes but I've found this cleanser makes the whole process a lot easier - you just wet the solid soap, swirl your brushes onto it and then rinse and leave to dry - simples! I was surprised at how effectively it cleaned them actually, literally takes seconds!

I was very excited to try this hand cream as Yes Nurse was founded by two nurses, which straight away raised my expectations for this product and I wasn't disappointed! You only need the smallest amount and it absorbs super quickly and my hands feel super soft almost instantly when I use this. You can usually tell when I've put it on because I can't keep my hands away from my nose haha - it smells like a french bakery - almond and honey mmm :)
The sample I got came with a cute pink sleeve which is supposed to raise awareness and money for breast cancer care. 50p is donated to the charity when you buy this. As I received this product for free, I decided to make my own donation and you can too by clicking here.
You can get the handcream for cheaper if you don't want the pink sleeve, but it is a cute touch :) I love everything about the packaging!  I know my mum would love this for Mother's Day as she always has really dry hands.

My skin is always breaking out and since using Lush's Tea Tree water, I've been on the hunt for more Tea Tree products. I bought this set from The Body Shop just before Christmas, I think it was around £13? It included a foaming cleaner, a toner and a clearing lotion. I loved the tingly feeling it gave my skin so much that I went back the next day to purchase the exfoliator too! It's great for drying out spots but it can be a bit aggressive if you use it every day, so I try and just focus the product on problem areas to avoid my whole face getting dry.

This serum claims to 'help dimish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, age spots and skin discolouration.' I can't say I have a problem with these things yet BUT it also promises to 'provide you skin with a better and smoother complexion by shrinking pores and evening out your skin tone.'
The packaging looks very medicinal which I can't decided if I like or not, but I suppose it does make it professional looking! The dropper comes in very handy for applying the serum. It smells as if you're rubbing a fresh orange on your face but without the stingy feeling you'd expect from a citrus fruit - that is my best way of describing it! It absorbs quickly into the skin and I have felt that my skin has been looking more ...glowy? - is that a word? - since using it every day! I'm not usually confident enough to go out without a scrap of make up but I have been having good skin days recently which could be down to using this? I guess you never know for sure..but I'll keep using it in case ey!

My Giveaway Prizes!

Saturday, 21 February 2015

A few weeks ago, whilst having a few drinks with some friends, my rather tipsy self heard my phone ping...someone had tweeted me. It was the lovely Beth from bethany-georgia.com to tell me I'd won her giveaway!!!

I've never won anything before so this was all very exciting!!

I won this Pink Sands Yankee candle and a Mac lipstick of my choice. I'm obsessed with Yankee Candles and this is one I'd never tried before so I was over the moon :) It smells so sweet yet not in an overpowering sickly way..it's very fresh!

I've never tried any of Mac's lipsticks before but I've been told that once you try one, you become hooked. I decided to go for 'Blankety' which I'd seen Beth mention in one of her earlier posts. It's a nude colour with a touch of pink - ideal as a first nude lipstick!! It has a lovely creamy texture and I think it suits my skin tone perfectly. It's great for a natural, understated look!

I had a go at swatching the lipstick for you! It's not the best photo, sorry! I haven't quite mastered taking photos with one hand - they do get rather wobbly...

Have you tried any of Mac's lipsticks before?

W7 Make up: A brand review*

Thursday, 12 February 2015

The morning before one of my uni exams, a lovely little parcel arrived at my door with some beauty products to review! I've never used W7 before, so I was very intrigued to try them. They're a much more affordable brand than some of the other favourites..

Full-time lip colour in Mars: Well when they say full time lip colour, they really do mean full time! I tried this and actually had a lot of trouble removing it, however it does say to use an oil based cleanser to remove so my fault for being unobservant. The Mars shade is too bright for me but this would be ideal for someone who constantly wears red on their lips - trust me, it won't budge all day! It's quite good that it also includes a clear gloss, if you want to make your lips 'pop' even more! Not bad at £4.95! I think their shades 'On trend' and 'Angel dust' would suit me better. They're a lot more subtle and less 'in your face.'You can see all the shades by clicking here.

Assorted 10 out of 10 eyeshadow palette: I was impressed with the variety of colours, I think they're all very wearable and the pastel colours will be perfect for Spring!
I've been using the blue shades the most, they do blend together quite nicely. I usually go for neutral shades, so it's quite fun experimenting with the different shades to create new looks.

I have to admit that I prefer matte shadows, but I think the more I use this, the more I'll like it. I also prefer using my urban decay brush to apply these but at £5.95, you can't really complain!

Absolute Lashes Mascara: This was my favourite product sent for review! The packaging makes it look much more expensive than it is (£6.95!!) and resembles Benefit's They're Real mascara. It's really great at lengthening lashes and I never thought I'd say this, but I picked this up thinking I was using my benefit one and didn't notice it wasn't till I put it down - it was that good! I don't think it's a substitute for They're Real, but it's a great alternative that won't break the bank!

Have you tried any W7 products? Which are your favourite?

White Chocolate and Cranberry Cookies (that taste like they're from Millie's!!)

Sunday, 8 February 2015

I absolutely love baking and I usually end up doing it on a Sunday afternoon. The end result can be hit or miss but this time it was definitely a hit!!

I didn't really know what to make, but wandered to Tesco for some inspiration..threw some white chocolate and cranberries into my basket (a classic combo) and skipped back home, in the hope I could actually find a recipe!

Bliss is what happened....

I adapted this recipe to make them and they genuinely do taste like they could be from Millie's!

Slightly cripsy on the outside and oh so moist in the middle....

(I hate the word moist too, but when it comes to cookies, it's necessary!)

The cranberries burst with sweetness in your mouth and if you eat them whilst they're warm, the white chocolate will be all melted and delicious..

I recommend eating them after they've slightly cooled but are still warm, along with a cold glass of milk!

To have a go yourself, you will need:

125g butter (leave it out the fridge so it softens)
225g of caster sugar
1 egg, beaten
1tsp vanilla extract
225g self raising flower
A pinch of salt
150g white chocolate
135g dried cranberries

1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees

2. Cream the butter and sugar together and then add the beaten egg and vanilla extract

3. Sift in the flour (I actually don't have a sieve - student life! - but it worked fine without) and throw in that pinch of salt

4. Roughly chop up your white chocolate into chunks of whatever size you want and add that, along with your cranberries

5. Knead the mixture into a dough. If it's not sticking together then add a splash of milk

6. Roll the dough into balls, just slightly bigger than a walnut and place on a greased baking tray

7. Pop in the oven for about 10-12 minutes - when they come out they should still be soft, but will harden as they cool, yet remain soft in the centre

Enjoy! x

Body Shop Blogger Meet Up!

Tuesday, 3 February 2015

Last week I attended my very first bloggers event at the Body Shop, organised by the lovely Aisling, who blogs over at rosy smiles!

I have to admit, I was a tad nervous..

..but I had nothing to worry about! Everyone was so friendly and the ultimate ice breaker was when we all simultaneously reached for our cameras to photograph the lovely spread of drinks and tempting nibbles - bloggers on the loose!

I did hover around this area for quite a bit!

There were lots of make up artists around that were happy to show us different products and how to use them!

Me and Katy decided to try out some lip products..Katy went for a bold, red look whereas I was looking for something just a little better than my own lip colour. I tend to shy away from big and bold, I just don't think I can carry it off!

I did end up buying the products they used because I loved the end result...just keep scrolling for that!

Katy and Sam!

I've never met fellow bloggers before so it was great chatting about our blogs and the products we love!

I spotted a few things I'll be going back for as soon as my student budget allows!

This Drops of Youth Bouncy Sleeping Mask is one of the Body Shop's new releases and they're not fibbing when they call it bouncy! It's really quite strange how it just goes back into shape! We got a sample of this in our goodie bags, and from what I have used, I'm very impressed! My skin was so soft that I didn't need to moisturise in the morning.

I finally had a photo taken with a selfie stick wooooo!!! They are a handy little gadget!

It really was great meeting the girls and I'll be seeing them very soon for the #NWbloggersmeetup in March - so excited!!!

So this is the first thing I bought..It's a Lip and Cheek Velvet Stick in Poppy Coral (shade 35.) - new for Spring 2015! I can assure you it's not a bright pink as it looks here on the photo!

I also got a lip liner in Beech shade. I've never even used lip liners before, but what a difference it makes. Beech is a natural nude shade, so it subtly defines your lips and makes a great base for the Lip and Cheek stick.

TADA! :) See, it's not too in your face, it just makes your lips look that little bit better, whilst still keeping a natural look - exactly what I look for in make up!

You can but the lip and cheek stick for £12 here
The Lip liner for £8 here

I also bought a lipstick and concealer brush for £9 here although I actually haven't been using it for applying my lip products as I find it easier to just whack it on!

Have you got any favourite products from The Body Shop? Let me know in the comments below!

Phhhewww that was a long post! Congratulations if you made it to the end!!!
