January Beauty Obsessions

Sunday, 22 January 2017

I think a lot of us find January a bit of a 'meh' month. Christmas and New Year came and went and the cold weather isn't so festive any more. BUT I bet you have a really big stock of toiletries now!

We all know it...you can't beat a pamper evening with some gorgeous smellies and the obligatory candle burning in the background!

Here are the products I am loving at the moment :)

I absolutely adore Lush but I do find it a tad pricey at times! I was very lucky to get this shampoo bar as a Christmas present. It claims to last around 80 washes...which suddenly makes the higher price seem like a bargain...and I'd say at the rate I'm using it, that's probably about right. It has been a godsend for my flat hair as it dries it out a bit which helps lift it at the roots! It also has a gorgeous fresh smell and leaves your hair looking shiny which one of my housemates even commented on. Another plus is its portable size! Absolutely perfect for popping in your toiletry bag and as it's solid, you can even have it in hand luggage!

Another Lush gift I received at Christmas! I love to use face masks once or twice a week to nourish my skin and this one ticks all the boxes for me. It has a minty refreshing smell and contains lots of gentle ingredients like honey which leave your skin feeling fresh and glowing afterwards. I definitely prefer thick textured masks to peel-off ones and Lush has never disappointed with their face masks.

When I first opened this to smell it I just kept on inhaling it in like I had some kind of problem! I am obsessed with its unique smell. It is sweet yet sort of aftershavey and its fragrant really clings to your skin after a shower leaving you smelling lovely all day! If you're going to pick a Molton Brown shower gel, make it this one! I promise you will have zero regrets.

I have really enjoyed sampling some of the Forever Living products I was recently sent but I have to say, this was surprisingly one of my favourites! I was sceptical as there are a lot of dental products out there that claim to give you that perfect Hollywood smile but I genuinely believe this has made my teeth shinier! My boyfriend borrowed some and commented on it himself! I love the packaging and it's definitely a lot bigger than your average toothpaste tube.

Drink water, remove your make up and moisturise - the key things to do for healthy skin. I am always changing between moisturisers but for the last month, I have stuck to this one by Forever Living. It is quickly absorbed and has kept that dry skin we all experience at some time over the winter months, at bay. I also find it makes a great primer if you use a smaller amount. Again, I love the smart packaging! All of their skincare range looks like this but in different colours, so they looks very organised lined up on my dressing table.

I think we all like to be that person that has their own unique scent so I am always looking for perfumes that nobody else has. I was drawn to the sophisticated look of this perfume bottle and with its black colouring, I thought it would be really strong but it actually has a very delicate sweet floral smell! It is my current 'go to' every day scent!

I haven't written about anything beauty-related in a while as food seems to have been the biggest thing in my life recently!!! Yess - even post-Christmas!

If you have any beauty favourites I'd love to hear about 'em :)

April Blogger Beauty Box

Sunday, 5 June 2016

When I saw that the fabulous Vix Meldrew had put together a beauty box especially for bloggers, I just had to sign up for one! They're only £10, including postage and you don't have to subscribe, just buy as you go.

Each box contains 4-5 full size products and is a great way of discovering new brands and products.

The April box is the first I've received and I wasn't disappointed with the variety in this one :)

Make Up Geek Blush in Infatuation - worth £7.95
I'd never heard of Make Up Geek before, but having a quick google, I realised that it's a much-loved brand by bloggers. That's why boxes like these are so good for discovering new favourites. I think the shade is a bit dark for me so I've passed this on to a friend. The texture of it was spot on though, as far as blushers go, so I'll have to try a different shade.

Witch Daily Primer and Clearing Serum - worth £6.99
This is without a doubt my favourite product in the box. I've been using it every day as I do like to use a primer before applying my make up and what a bonus that this works away underneath it all to fight off spots! I genuinely have seen an improvement in my skin since using this. It hasn't got a silliconey texture like porefessional does, it's more like a gel.

Maya Hair Styling and Curling Creme - sample
I haven't heard of Maya hair products before but I'm looking forward to trying this. Since I had my hair cut shorter, I'm having to experiment more with hair products to give it a of style. In the past, I've only been a shampoo, conditioner and hairspray kinda gal!

1001 Remedies Soin Millenaire - worth £69
This price of this anti-ageing cream could buy you 7 boxes, that's how good the box is for money! The cream claims to stimulate collagen production, which at that price, I hope it truly does. The cream is rich and nourishing, but I couldn't get over the smell of it. Not a fan sadly, so I've given this to my mum....Saying that, I've still been stealing a bit before bed because it does feel so nice on the skin.

Tropic Sun Drops Tanning Serum - worth £22
This is a completely novel product to me. You add a few drops to your moisturiser and it's supposed to gradually give you more and more of a tan. I've only actually used it once so far and I did notice a subtle glow. Will get it out more as the holiday season nears! It's a bit more than I'd usually pay for a tanning product but that's why getting these boxes is so good - you don't pay full price :)

Merumaya Overnight Recharge Cream - Sample
It's difficult to review a product with such a small sample but from what I've tried, this cream has a nice smell, texture and feel on the skin. I absolutely love the Merumaya mud mask so it was nice to get something else from the brand.

TOTM Tampons - worth £2.80
Well it's always good to have a practical product isn't it! I haven't used these yet but I'm sure these will come in handy. They're 100% organic cotton and will be good for those of us with sensitive skin. It's a bit of a rubbish time anyway without having any allergic reactions to deal with too!

So in summary, this whole box was worth approximately £108.74...and I got it all for a tenner including postage and packaging. You really can't get much better than that can you :)!!!

Which subscription boxes do you recommend?

Smokey Suedes Eyeshadow Palette

Saturday, 16 April 2016

I was super lucky this month to win this beautiful Ciate Smokey suedes eyeshadow palette by Olivia Palermo (what a mouthful) from Just Jodes giveaway. I never usually win things so I was a bit shocked and of course very excited when I got a message to say I had.

I will start off by saying that the palette is a lot smaller than I had pictured but I think this makes it perfect for popping in your bag when you're on the go. I love the crocodile skin texture it has and of course black and gold  always looks classy.

I have small hands so here's a picture so you can see the size. A great little travel item! There's a compact mirror too so you can check you're still looking fabulous ;)

It comes with 9 shades of which there is a generous amount of each. Much bigger than in the Naked palette where there's big holes in my favourite shades!

So far I have only used the neutral shades which are easy to blend and compliment each other well. They're not the most pigmented so I used a few layers to build them up but they're perfect for a natural look. Despite the shimmer in some of the colours, they don't make a mess of your face when you apply them and have a weightless feel  to them. They lasted all day with only a small amount melting in the crease of my eyes but I didn't wear a primer like I normally would.

I'm going to have fun creating smokey looks with the blue/grey shades, they're all super wearable and offer something different to my beloved Naked palette!

It's such a pretty item and I think it would be the perfect gift (or you know, a treat for yourself) for any beauty lovers! If you know of any make up tutorials using this palette I'd love to see them so drop any links in the comments :)

five beauty favourites from March

Thursday, 31 March 2016

 1. This month I've been loving Nivea 3 in 1 Micellar Water. It's the perfect skincare product if you're a bit lazy with your regime (like me!) as it gently removes eye make up, cleanses your skin as well as moisturising it. I had awful skin when I bought this and noticed a big improvement after a few days and now, a week on, I haven't got any spots and my skin no longer feels dry. I put the link for boots in my post but I actually got it for half price in tesco so it might be worth checking if they still have the offer on.

2. I got this Rhubarb and Rose Molton Brown hand cream as a present and I love its unusual but gorgeous scent. My hands have been really dry lately so this product has been an absolute must! Bonus points for the pretty pink packaging :) I've also got the shower gel in this scent!

 3. This body lotion by Garnier  is so easy to use when you jump out of the shower with its pump, soaks into your skin quickly an smells divine. Again, another one for us lazy girls as it requires minimal effort to apply, just have it handy in the bathroom :)

 4. I found this Creighton's Shower Gel in a garden centre and was drawn to it because of its similarity to the treacle moon products which I'm a big fan of. It smells amazing and reminds me of a perfume that I can't for the life of me remember the name of! I love trying new brands.

5. This is a case of keeping the best till last because this foundation has been a game changer for me. It lasts all day, gives good coverage but feels weightless on your skin. You only need a pea sized amount to do all of your face and it is a little pricey but I'm prepared to pay it for something that delivers and that I get use of nearly every day!! Estee Lauder Double Wear  Light  is going to be hard to beat. I get it in intensity 2.

Wake Me Up Face Mask recipe

Sunday, 13 March 2016

My mum's friend has the most amazing skin. She's in her 50s but looks like she's in the lower end of her 30s, so any skin advice she can give me, I know I can trust. This lady knows what she's doing. And here is one of her secrets - coffee!!

We all know that a cup of coffee is great for kick starting the day, but did you know it can also have great rejuvenating effects on your skin? I didn't until a couple weeks ago.

Coffee has stimulating effects that improve the blood flow to your skin, making it look brighter and well, awake! It also acts to tighten the skin and contains antioxidants that can delay premature ageing and reduces redness.  I know, I'm always skeptical of claims like this but when I use this mask I do feel it is doing something  good for my skin.

*WARNING - your face will smell like Costa after using this*

So basically all you need is:

4 teaspoons of natural yoghurt
2 teaspoons of ground coffee
2 teaspoons of honey

Mix them together and you're good to go.

It really is that easy! Smother it all over your face and leave on for as long as you want, preferably whilst having a nice soak in the bath :)

I was told to use this mask once a month, so have a try and let me know what you think!

The Festive Build up

Saturday, 12 December 2015

I am so happy to have a spare bit of time to myself to write a post. It has been a while now! Sadly, I forgot my charger for my camera when I came home for Christmas so I'm afraid these pics are just from my phone- sorry!

With Christmas quickly approaching, I wanted to bring some of that festiveness to my blog :)

Last weekend, Tom and I decided to make some iced Christmas cookies to share with friends. We used this recipe, which is ironically called Easter Biscuits but never mind..it worked! We left out the cinnamon and currants though and just stuck to vanilla essence (so actually we forgot to put that in but I recommend adding a drop or two!).

For more festive bakes, have a look at the melting snowmen I made last year!

Both are the sort of biscuits you made in primary school and they bring back so many childhood memories making (and eating) them.

I drove home for Christmas on Thursday and walked in to my bedroom to find my parents had got me a brand new bed, bedding and fairy lights as an early birthday present. My mum also got me a little Christmas tree which I am in love with!!

The bedding is from Asda, who apparently have a fair few festive designs out at the moment. I love how it's Christmassy without being too tacky. Just a nice subtle nod that says "yes, it's winter."

The fairy lights that you can just about see are little pine cones, made from silver and white glass! They're so cute!

Finally, I just wanted to mention a little something I treated myself to; the Soap and Glory Box! You get 9 full size products for £30 which I think is an absolute steal when you think how much the products are individually. I got one last year and I still have some left over - it really is fab!

You can find the link for it here.

What have you been up to over the festive build up? Let me know in the comments below or send me links to any Christmassy posts! I'd love a read!

Summer Ball: What I wore

Monday, 15 June 2015

Last Saturday was my Vet School's Summer Ball. I'd never been to one before so got quite excited and decided to make an effort since the course rarely gives us opportunity to be all dressed up and glamorous..you know, with all this arms up the backsides of cows business!

I'm terrible at hair so decided to get a hairdresser to do me a pretty up do :) I asked for something braided and up but quite soft and messyish! I was pleased with the end result and you can find the hairdresser's instagram here - she's Liverpool based!

I went for quite simple make up as my dress was quite glitzy :)

Highlighter: Benefit's High Beam

Mascara: Mac False Lashes

Lipstick: Mac Blankety

Phewww.. seems like a lot of make up when I type it all out like that! But there's the full list :) My earrings* are from Absolute Pearls and can be found here!

And now for the dress!!!

So I know people usually say that petite girls don't suit long dresses but I reaaaaallly wanted to wear one and feel all princess like, so I just got one anyway :) I got this beauty from Coast! I felt like Cinderella wearing that shade of blue! I also had some sparkly silver shoes which are hidden away but peeped out every now and again, or when I'd trip over (often.) My shoes can be found and seen here at Dorothy Perkins. I can't find a link to the matching clutch bag but they did have lots in the shop! Also, how lovely and pretty do my friends all look!!

The venue was beautiful. Picture a huge white marquee with coloured bunting, pomspoms and flowers!! The food was delicious too but I feel like I've rambled on about food a lot lately on my blog so thought I'd give you something a little different!

What do you all think?

My favourite blogs

Thursday, 14 May 2015

I've wanted to write this post for months but just never got round to it. I hope you find some new favourites from this great bunch!

Becky's lifestyle blog is full of pretty pink pastel photography and her room gives me major bedroom envy! I've found so many pretty items through reading Becky's posts as well as my 'go to' foundation. This is the blog that inspired me to write my own blog!

Rosie's photos are incredible! I love her mouthwatering recipes and restaurant reviews. Her photos are so big, I just want to grab the food from the screen. Her posts about the Maldives were amongst some of my favourites - she's been to some incredible places! Rosie's witty puns always have me smiling whilst reading.

If you like making your nails look pretty, then Ioanna's blog is for you! She has a real mix of posts - her reviews of beauty products tend to be my favourite but I do love blogs with a bit of variety. I've followed Ioanna since the beginning and have loved watching her blog and photography grow.

This summer I'm going to try and attempt as many of Tashiana's recipes as possible - they really are something else! As well as being a great baker and photographer, Tasha is a comical writer! It's hard to find blogs with a good individual writing style, but this is one of those special gems!

Katy and I share a love of food and I relate to so much of what she says! Her blog has a real mix of posts which appears to be a common factor amongst all these fab blogs I've listed! I love a good restaurant review and seeing what people ordered - just nosey like that.

If I'm looking for a decent beauty product, Helen's blog is where I'll head to. I've come to trust her opinions and recommendations. She also writes a lot of useful 'tips and tricks' posts which I've learnt a lot from.

So there they all are, in no particular order! What are your favourite blogs?

Blemish battles

Friday, 10 April 2015

I don't know about you but keeping breakouts at bay really can feel like a battle at time - an ongoing one! I've tried so many different products, so here are my thoughts on the ones I've been using the most in the last few months.

Some of the products were from my #nwbloggers meetup
goodie bag but I wasn't obliged to blog about anything in it and all thoughts here are my own :)

I'm going to dive straight in there and start with what is probably my favourite anti-blemish product. I have tried some of Witch's products in the past and found them a bit harsh but this clearing serum is actually gentle on the skin and hydrating, unlike most spot fighting products that dry the skin. One pump gives you a generous amount and is enough to apply to your face and neck. My skin always feels lovely the next morning when I apply this before bed!

This product was sent to me by a PR company but I did choose to accept it based on the love I already have for Sudocrem..you know the big grey tubs?

Well they have now released a version that comes in a very handy tube that you can pop into your handbag. This is their 'adult' version and it has the same key ingredients but in different proportions. What I love about this is that you can use it not only for spots, but also to calm down rashes or patches of dry skin and it only costs £1.99 which is a bargain! It definitely has a quick soothing effect on spots, calming down any redness....I have to admit though, you do have to give the bottle quite a squeeze as the cream is quite thick!

Vichy Hyaluspot smells gorgeous and is really gentle on the skin despite being a product that helps fight off spots! It comes out like a light gel that you apply directly to spots...but I end up smothering it all over my face so my face smells good! I find it leaves my skin looking and feeling brighter and fresh :)

You've probably came across this toner before..I have mentioned it in a previous post too :) I've grown up knowing tea tree is good for spots and this really is. It leaves your skin all tingly which I like as you can feel the product working. It can dry out your skin though if you use it too often so make sure you moisturise too or just apply it onto breakout areas!

I couldn't get a good picture of Skinetica sorry, but you can see it in the 'group photo' at the top :) It doesn't smell particularly great but I do love using Skinetica underneath my make up so that it can work away at my blemishes despite wearing foundation on top!

Recent beauty purchases

Tuesday, 31 March 2015

I bought a few beauty products last week in the hope of sprucing up my make up collection, ready for Spring!! There was also a great online sale on Superdrug's website - so you know, good timing really!

I wasn't much of a lipstick wearer until about two months ago when I won a mac lipstick in a giveaway which you can read about here! It was in the shade 'Blankety' which is a gorgeous subtle nude - perfect for a new lipstick wearer.

I decided to tip-toe out of my comfort zone and buy some 'a little bit more but not that much in your face' shades from l'oreal's colour riche range. I got three for an amazing £6 in the online sale -a bargain that I couldn't miss, especially as they're normally £6.99 each!

Wooo my first ever swatches!

Greige Amoureux and Fuschia Declaration have a bit of shimmer in them whereas Erotique is matte. All three are quite moisturising which is perfect for me as my lips are always so dry!

I'd been using Rimmel's Wake Me Up foundation up until last week but decided to call it a day as it was just making me look oily and the fact I'd picked up the wrong shade didn't help either...so I went back to my old favourite: Revlon Colorstay Foundation in 'Sand Beige'. It gives great coverage and stays matte all day. It does a great job at hiding my huge pores too! The only thing I think could be improved would be if it had a little pump as I often end up pouring too much of the foundation out!

Finally, I picked up two Barry M speedy quick dry nail varnishes which I've had my eye on for a while. I chose Pit Stop (left) and Hearbeat (right.)

I love painting my nails but I'm quite impatient and always end up smudging them into a horrible mess. These dry in around 60 seconds so are ideal for letting you carry on with your day :)

As I'm home from Uni at the moment, I decided to give my dressing table a little spring clean too :) What do you think?

#NWBloggersMeetUp Part Two: The Goodie Bag

Sunday, 22 March 2015

So here it is...the one you were waiting for; The #NWBloggersMeetup Goodie Bag!

First of all I just want to say a huge thank you to all the brands that were so generous and got involved in our event! I am overwhelmed by the amount of samples we were given to try and I am still working my way through it all so I will be able to do proper reviews later :) But for now, have a good nosey!!

I know you can't realllly see it properly but if you can spy the can on the right hand side, that's Virtue Strawberry and Peach Ice Tea which tastes super refreshing! Apart from Lipton's Ice Tea, I've never found another one I like until now. It's something that would be perfect for a hot summery day. You also can't really see the Nail HQ all-in-one formula but it deserves a mention as I have tried it out and liked the results. It's a clear varnish containing argan oil and minerals, which can be worn under or on top of your regular nail polish. I always break my nails so I'll be using this as much as I can now!

The Mello and Mallo marshmallows didn't last long as you can imagine! I've never tried gourment mashmallows before but they taste amazing, even just standard vanilla flavour mmm... Foodwise, we also got a few packets of Border biscuits which have been a great addition to my daily cuppas! Crunchy Oat Crummbles is my favourite! If you can spy the silver hearts bracelet, that's from Utility, which I mention all the time and is made by Estella Bartlett. I will have to put a better photo up of it later because I absolutely love it! It's so dainty and pretty.

Bespoke Bracelets kindly gave us these!! How cute of them :) They'd make great personalised little gifts!

I apologise for the fact that a lot of these photos are a bit manic..I just didn't know where to begin! But can you spy the Amazing Cosmetics concealer samples? I've been using it a lot this week and I'll be buying a full size tube as soon as my student budget allows for it...It's reaaaaallllly good at hiding blemishes and I have had awful skin this week! I haven't tried the Vichy Normaderm Hyaluspot cream (what a mouthful!) yet but it is meant to be for blemish-prone skin so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Sweet Cecily's sent us these super cute personalised lip balms! I think this was my favourite item in the goodie bag due to the personal touch and you can ask them to print any photo onto their balms - great as a gift or wedding favour! Mine is Mojito flavour and it really is a delicious smell! Their shop is based in Whitby which is close to home, so I'll definitely be popping in next time I'm there.

Okay, so these two items weren't from the goodie bag, I actually won them in the raffle but I couldn't leave them out! They are from the Naked Skincare Company which is a very natural and eco-friendly brand. I really love their packaging! I have only tried the Hemp and Avocado Body Butter so far which has the texture of actual butter..you know when it's been left out..not like hard out the fridge! It doesn't have the strongest scent but it does leave your skin super hydrated and feels a bit how bio-oil does when you rub it in. I feel like it'd be great for stretch marks!

The Dessert Counter sent us some yummy macarons and cake pops! The macarons are the nicest I've tried and I'd never had cake pops before but they tasted amazing! Baked goods are always a win with me..

I have tried the Glam Glow Mud since my last post but only once so I can't really give it a fair review. It smells amazing, feels nice on your skin but I'm not sure I'd pay £50 for the full tub unless I really start to see miracles..not whilst I'm a student anyway - definitely more a luxury item! They gave us a brush to put it on with which made it feel extra special :)

A few pineapple themed pieces from Utility again - A pineapple lip balm, which I am yet to try and a 3D room fresher thingy (do these have a proper name?!)

Witch Overnight Skin Clearing Serum - I have been using this all week because I love how hydrating it is. It feels less harsh on your skin than their blemish stick, which I feel you can only use on targeted areas! My skin has been breaking out terribly this week but I feel like it has stopped some of them coming out properly.

I'm not a frequent user of fake tan after a few disasters, so I'm a bit nervous about trying this self tan bronzing mineral powder from Vita Liberata. You brush it over moisturiser or liquid foundations and it claims to last for up to 5 days! I'll be saving this one for the summer time I think, when I'm away from uni..just in case it goes wrong, but hopefully it'll be easier to use compared to other products I've used in the past!

We also got some more fake tan products from Xen-tan; A body scrub and a luminous glow gel self-tan in medium. I've had a professional spray tan using Xen-tan which looked really natural, so hopefully I'll be able to achieve this at home now!

I was really excited about these Asleep and Awake potions from Faust's Potions but I have to be honest and say that they really don't smell good. I gulped down the asleep potion which tasted better than it smelt, but still... really not good....I did have a great night sleep though but it's always hard to tell with these things whether or not it's just the placebo effect..I don't know!

This Happy Lips lip balm from Blistex smells so fruity and summery! I've pictured just the Mango one as I gave my housemate the Strawberry one to try. All the blogger girls have said how much they love this lip balm and it's another one of my favourite items, easily :) I'll be picking up more of these come summer!

This eye gel which is supposed to stop puffy eyes is from Balance Cosmetics. I don't really get puffy eyes so I can't really say much about that but I've been using it a lot before bed just because I like the cooling sensation is has on my eyes...sends me straight to sleep!

This hand cream from Crabtree and Evelyn has already made its way into my handbag. It has a fresh water sort of smell which I love :)

I'm really loving this Mavala nail varnish in shade 'Elle'. I've actually got it on as I'm typing! I hadn't heard of the brand before so it was a good little introduction :) It's a good colour for every day and not OTT for work or whatever!

I'm a sucker for stationary!! I was so happy to get the coloured pens from Stabilo because I use them a lot for revision. I'm so much more productive when I get new stationary!

I got a magnetic 'to do' note pad from Busy B which will come in very handy, as well as some cute kitchen labels. You would not believe how excited I got over kitchen labels haha..I now have visions of myself making my own jams and chutneys just so I can use them!!! Who knows, maybe in the summer I'll have a go at that!

A cute card from Utility! I'm pleased I got this one as I'm a keen tea drinker! I might just stick it on my wall rather than give it away (I know, how selfish) as it's so cute :)

Skinetica is an anti-blemish toner than can be worn under make-up which I think is great! I know it's not great for your skin when you wear foundation etc. so I feel a little less guilty about it when I have this working away underneath it all! I don't really like the smell of it though which is the only negative thing I have to say about it! It's not bad enough to put me off using it though!

Finally, a big shout out to Wild Thang who made our lovely bags :)

I have tried to include as much of the goodie bag items as I could, but there was soooo much! I will be able to tell you more about them as time goes on though.

Anything caught your eye?
